Thank you for taking an interest in St John Plessington Catholic College.
It is my great privilege to serve as Headteacher of this very special school. SJP is a thriving, inclusive Catholic community in which every person is known, valued and encouraged to fulfil their God-given potential.
Our vision is simple but ambitious: “A Catholic learning community committed to excellence in all we do.” Our mission is “To build an inclusive Catholic community founded on the Gospel values.” These commitments are brought to life each day through our values of Compassion, Respect, Determination and Justice.
We make no apologies for having high expectations of every pupil. Our clear standards, Be Smart, Be Present and Be Kind, help to create the calm, respectful and purposeful environment in which young people can learn and thrive. Visitors regularly comment on the warmth of our welcome, the positive relationships between pupils and staff, and the confidence, kindness and pride demonstrated by our pupils.
At SJP, we believe that a great education is about far more than examination results. However, strong academic outcomes open doors and enable young people to lead choice-filled lives. Our 2026 GCSE results reflected the significant progress being made across the school. Our sixth-form students also continue to achieve strongly, progressing to universities, apprenticeships and employment locally and nationally.
High-quality teaching sits at the heart of our work. We provide a broad, ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum that develops pupils’ subject knowledge, literacy, numeracy, confidence and ability to think deeply. Staff use questioning and assessment to check understanding, challenge misconceptions and ensure that every pupil participates actively in their learning.
Our commitment to inclusion is central to everything we do. We work to identify and remove barriers so that pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those requiring additional pastoral or academic support can participate fully in school life. Our dedicated SEND provision, enhanced transition programme, resource provision and pastoral teams ensure that individual needs are understood and supported. Our school building is also lift-accessible, helping us to provide an inclusive environment for our whole community.
We want every pupil to experience a genuine sense of belonging. Through our Belong Curriculum and nine enrichment pathways, pupils have opportunities to explore:
Each pathway supports national enrichment benchmarks and is rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. Alongside this, pupils can participate in sport, music, drama, debating, environmental projects, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Faith in Action, charitable work, educational visits and many other activities.
Our thriving sixth form enables pupils to complete a seven-year journey with us. It combines high expectations with personalised support, excellent teaching, dedicated facilities and strong preparation for university, apprenticeships and employment.
Our facilities have been transformed through two significant redevelopment programmes. Pupils benefit from dedicated sixth-form accommodation, modern classrooms, specialist spaces for engineering, IT, drama and dance, extensive sports facilities and a welcoming library.
Partnership with parents and carers is essential. Through open and respectful communication, we can work together to secure the very best education, care and opportunities for every young person. While our website provides a wide range of information, there is no substitute for speaking with us directly or experiencing SJP for yourself.
We are proud of our pupils, our staff and the positive progress our school continues to make. I warmly invite you to visit St John Plessington Catholic College and experience our community in action.
