Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

At St John Plessington Catholic College, the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of every pupil is integral to our commitment to educating the whole person. Rooted in our Catholic ethos, Gospel values and belief in the dignity of every person, our Personal Development provision works alongside the wider curriculum, Religious Education, Citizenship, enrichment and Catholic life to develop pupils’ character, confidence and resilience and prepare them to become responsible, respectful and active citizens.

Through this whole-school approach, pupils develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to participate positively in modern Britain, appreciate diversity, contribute to their communities and understand their responsibilities towards others and the common good.

Pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010 and learn why equality, dignity and respect for others are fundamental to life in modern Britain.

Spiritual Development
Spiritual development is fostered by providing pupils with opportunities to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences while developing knowledge of and respect for the beliefs of others.
Through Religious Education, prayer and liturgy, Personal Development and the wider curriculum, pupils are encouraged to ask meaningful questions, explore their place in the world and develop a sense of curiosity and fascination about themselves, others and the world around them.
Opportunities for reflection, creativity and self-expression help pupils to develop their individual identity while recognising and respecting different perspectives.

Moral Development
Moral development enables pupils to develop a clear understanding of right and wrong, personal responsibility and the consequences of their choices.
Pupils learn about the importance of rules and laws within school and wider society and are encouraged to explore moral and ethical issues, listen to different viewpoints and express their own opinions thoughtfully.
Oracy, discussion and debate provide opportunities for pupils to consider challenging issues, weigh evidence and develop reasoned judgements. The College’s expectations and Behaviour and Rewards Policy reinforce these principles, including clear expectations around being Present, Smart and Kind.

Social Development
Social development is promoted through a wide range of opportunities for pupils to participate, collaborate and contribute to school and wider community life.
Pupil voice, the Junior Leadership Team, pupil-led groups, enrichment activities and charitable and community opportunities enable pupils to develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.
Pupils are encouraged to become active citizens who understand their responsibilities towards others and who can participate positively in different social and community settings.

Cultural Development
Cultural development encourages pupils to appreciate their own cultural heritage while developing curiosity about the diverse cultures, faiths and traditions that make up modern Britain and the wider world.
Through the curriculum, Religious Education, assemblies, Personal Development and wider school experiences, pupils explore different beliefs, cultures and perspectives and recognise both the richness of difference and the values and experiences that people and communities share.
Pupils of different faiths and backgrounds are encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences with their peers, strengthening understanding, mutual respect and appreciation of diversity.

Fundamental British Values
The fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are actively promoted through SJP’s Personal Development curriculum and reinforced across school life. Academies are expected to actively promote these values as part of preparing pupils for life in modern Britain.

Democracy is experienced through pupil voice, voting, leadership opportunities and pupil-led groups.
The rule of law is explored through curriculum learning, discussion, assemblies, clear behavioural expectations and engagement with external agencies.

Individual liberty is promoted within a safe and supportive environment where pupils are encouraged to make informed choices and understand how to exercise their rights and freedoms responsibly.

Mutual respect and tolerance are central to the ethos of the College and are developed through education about different faiths, beliefs, cultures and perspectives, alongside the College’s work to challenge bullying, discrimination and prejudice.

Through this whole-school approach, SJP seeks to ensure that pupils do more than simply understand these values: they have meaningful opportunities to experience and practise them.

By developing pupils spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, the College prepares young people to live fulfilling lives, contribute positively to their communities and become respectful, active and responsible citizens in a diverse and changing society.
