About the Course:

This subject is offered as an A Level course. Food Technology A Level provides an opportunity for you to develop your own creativity and capability within the field of food. You will learn to apply knowledge and understanding to a range of technological activities linked with food development. You will develop your understanding of the application of food science with the emphasis on food chemistry to find out why foods react and behave the way they do. You will further develop the areas of designing and marketing trends in relation to the development of a new food product.  Other areas of study include industrial and commercial practices in the manufacture of food, including the preservation of different foods; environmental issues associated with food production including the importance of the use of seasonal products; the social and moral impact of food choice and production and exploring socio-economic influences on food trends.

Unit 1: External 2 hour examination (worth 20% of overall A Level)
Topics to be covered include:

  • Designing and innovation
  • Product analysis
  • Materials and components
  • Industrial and commercial practice.

Unit 2: Design and Make - portfolio (worth 30% of overall A Level)
This is approximately 40 hours of coursework to demonstrate your learning
through designing and making.

Unit 3: External 2½ hour examination (worth 20% of overall A Level)
Topics to be covered include:

  • Designing and innovation
  • Product analysis
  • Human responsibility
  • Public interaction
  • Materials and components
  • Industrial and commercial practice

Unit 4: Major Project (worth 30% of overall A Level)
This is approximately 60 hours of coursework where you will undertake a single substantial project. The project requires you to demonstrate the integration of designing and making skills and knowledge and understanding.

Other courses to be studied alongside Food Technology include Chemistry, Health and Social Care and Physical Education.

The food industry is a major employer in the UK - a highly competitive and challenging sector offering a wealth of employment opportunities. This course covers a wide range of Food Technology issues which allow you to follow pathways of interest to your future career. Progression routes into further training and higher education are wide-ranging eg: Nursing, Nutrition and Health Studies, Dietetics, Food Microbiology, Consumer Science, Health Promotion.
